HIV can be treated quite effectively. The treatment for HIV is anti-HIV drugs (Highly Active Anti Retro-viral Treatment – HAART). This does not cure you from HIV. You will always have the virus in your body, but it can reduce the amount of virus in your blood stream (viral load) so it becomes a safer amount (undetectable).
With HAART it is possible to live a long and healthy life.
- HAART – which discusses exactly what the treatment is and how it works
- Do I need IT? – which may be able to help you to clarify some things around why you might need to take treatment and what you might like to consider before taking treatment
As with all decisions, whether to take HIV treatment is a personal decision. You might like to discuss the positives and negatives (pros and cons) with someone you can trust. You can call us if you like. It is also recommended that you discuss your treatment options with your HIV consultant as there are several different combinations of HAART.
Taking the medicine is up to you.
There have been a lot of studys done around treatment and there are new drugs being created all the time. The information in this section is basic and will not discuss all the options.
