Concerned people in Limerick got together and formed the Limerick AIDS Alliance in 1989. They started a helpline providing information and support.
The employment of a full time co-ordinator in September 1993 gave the Limerick AIDS Alliance new direction, and in February 1994 the name was changed to the Red Ribbon Project. The mission of the Red Ribbon Project was outlined to be the provision of client-led HIV and AIDS Care and Prevention Services throughout the Mid-West of Ireland.
The exciting and diverse work, completed with the backing of a FÁS scheme in 1994, brought recognition and identified a need for a more general Sexual Health Programme.
Since 1995, the Red Ribbon Project has provided HIV and AIDS, and Sexual Health Services in the Mid-West of Ireland.
